The Moving Guys "Love" Me Because...

The Moving Guys "Love" Me Because...

  • I'm prepared
  • My stuff is packed
  • My boxes were sorted between heavy and light
  • They could access the large furniture because I didn't put anything on it or in front of it
  • I had my own dolly that they could use to work faster
  • I offered them cold water with ice (apparently they are often given warm water, eww!)
  • Either my apartment or I smelled good (although they weren't sure which)

Pocket Susan Advice: Using movers was AMAZING and the more prepared you are, the better the experience will be.  Do your research and identify the best mover by value and reference.  Account for some unexpected charges or extra time.  And on moving day, don't be a flake -- have your boxes packed, know what you're doing and where you're going.  As an aside, according to reliable sources, you are not required to tip movers unless they give EXCEPTIONAL service.

    Re-Racking Your Own Weight

I take a fitness class at a ridiculously early hour in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Fridays are the weight room days.  The people in the class with me are other faculty and staff members at my university.  These are people that I would assume are well-educated and respectful of others and in most cases my assumption would be correct.  This is in contrast to the student population who uses the facility other days and leaves weights everywhere for me to trip over.

Today, I saw that our students are really learning from us.  I was waiting for another class member to finish up on the leg press.  This person saw me waiting for the leg press.  She finished her rep.  Picked herself up  and then walked away with the weights still on the machine.  She didn't bother to ask if I needed those weights, which I didn't.  This after our instructor specifically told us that we were responsible for putting away our weights each time we used them.  Well,  no wonder our students don't clean up after themselves... look at the example we're setting.

Pocket Susan Advice: If you're joining a gym or taking a class of any kind (fitness, art, whatever) make sure you understand the etiquette of that situation and follow it.  In the gym, re-rack your weights.  In your painting class, wash out your brushes.  Talk to your instructor and go the extra mile to make sure that the other people in the class enjoy being around you.  Don't be a jackass by participating ignorant of the class culture.

    Where Are My Pants?

There are a few things you need to know before I relate this story.  1) I've been participating in a fitness program through UT three days a week before work this semester that seems to be helping me tone up.  2) I'm not sure if I'm actually losing weight, but this seems likely since most of my pants are too big.

So hurray for that!  Anyway, I've been getting ready for the big move that's coming up and really trying to purge.  I took a large donation to Goodwill on Saturday that included 5 pairs of pants that were way too big.  This left me only 3 pairs that were sort of too big, but will do for a while until I either get back into my normal weight pants or can afford to buy new.   All of these were part of the mass amount of laundry I washed on Sunday afternoon.

Bright and early at 5:15am I got up and got ready to go work out.  At 6:15 I was throwing my work clothes in my gym bag and ready to walk out the door.  But, "where are my pants?!"  I couldn't find them anywhere!  They weren't in the folded laundry, which got dumped on the floor.  Or the boxes of clothes that were half-packed for the move.  It dawned on me that I must have left them at the laundry room in my apartment complex.  Grr!

And there they were.  Still in the washer.  So I called my colleague and work out buddy and said, "I'm sorry, but I won't make it this morning.  I don't have any pants."
