I Would Like to Be Descriminated Against

Discrimination definitely has a bad connotation; especially in the higher ed/student affairs world.  As a rule, I am against discrimination and would be upset if I felt that I had been a victim of discrimination.  However, there is an appropriate use of "discrimination".  For example, on Facebook the other day I receive "mafia wars" request from a person that I haven't spoken to in years.  Furthermore, when we were in a position to see each other and speak to each other, we didn't.  This tells me that the Facebook title of "friend" is a misnomer.

I think that this person should have discriminated.  She should have known that the majority of her "friends" on Facebook were not actually friends and had no desire to be sent an asinine request.

So next time you think about adding me to a request list for mafia wars or farmland or which celebrity was your crush in 1995, please don't hesitate to discriminate against me.  Thanks.

Side Pocket: The Not-So-Much-OF-A-Surprise Birthday Party

From my friend Jen, whose birthday is the day before mine.  Happy B-Day Jen!

James sent an email to Stacy because she had asked him for my email address.  She was having a jewelry party or something to which she wanted to invite me.  I'm not sure why, but James CCed me on it.  Perhaps so that I would then have Stacy's email address and not delete her party invite?  Who knows?

Anyway, in the email James said, "Stacy, here is Jen's email.  And don't forget about her surprise birthday party Friday night."

So when he got home I asked him what was going on at the Winery on Friday night and he said he didn't know.  I said, "Really?  You don't know of anything at 7pm at the Winery on Friday?"

James got really upset and said, "I can't believe Stacy told you about the surprise party!"

And I said, "James, she didn't tell me, you CCed me."

Honestly, I'm relieved.  You know I hate suprises.  And James wouldn't have told me we were going somewhere nice.  He would have just let me where jeans and a scruffy t-shirt on Friday and then I would have looked like crap.  I hope he learned his lesson.

Side Pocket: From Anonymous Friend

My friend just got the funniest answer to an EHarmony question ever.

The questions she selected out of the list was:  Which sort of date sounds like the most fun to you?

The answer choices were:

A) attend a lecture on a topic that appeals to both of you

B) go bargain hunting at a local flea market or antique shop

C) go bowling

D) visit a local comedy club

Her match wrote in and selected a fifth option:

E) Going to a monster truck rally while playing the "count the mullets" drinking game

Half-Way Celebration!

My friend Lindsay was in San Antonio from South Carolina for a conference last week so I drove down to see her.  In addition to catching up, which was long overdue, we were able to celebrate passing the half-way mark for Lindsay's husband's deployment to Afghanistan.  Lindsay, her wonderful mother Edith who was down from Waco, and I had drinks at the conference hotel and then headed down to the Riverwalk for dinner.  The weather was gorgeous.  The food was delicious.  And the company couldn't be beat!

Bathroom Redo

The bathrooms in my office were redecorated this year.  Apparently there were complaints about them looking "too institutional".  So here are some pics from the bathroom... draw your own conclusions about the efforts to cozy them up.

Do you enjoy the giant dandelion stencil?

$1 million to the person who can come up with a valid explanation for the half shower curtain behind the full-length mirror.

They match the curtain and the fake flower vase, but what you may not be able to see is that both the tissue holder and the soap dispenser are empty.  They just sit on top of the "institutional" paper towel dispenser/trash can (see below).  Yeah, there is absolutely no purpose for these containers.

I will admit that I left that little container of lotion there.  It was a gift and I didn't like the scent, but thought others might.
